Hand Painted Adirondack Chair
Hand painted Adirondack Chairs are some of America’s most treasured furniture designs. The story for these chairs goes back more than a century to 1903 and to one Thomas Lee. When Thomas Lee was on a holiday deep in the Adirondack Mountains he realized that his summer home needed some simple chairs for outdoor use. Being an industrious man he designed the first prototypes for hand painted Adirondack chairs and proceeded to take those designs and build them by himself from his own two hands. His family served had to test them out for him.
Hand painted Adirondack chairs a certain way of being manufactured which is quite different from your generic chairs. Hand painted Adirondack chairs were made with eleven pieces of wood, each piece being carved from a single plank of wood. This method of getting wood from a single source gave the chairs a complete and unique finish. The mountainous terrain was also in Thomas Lee’s mind when these chairs were made. According to Thomas Lee’s intentions each chair had a straight back. Also in every chair the seat was set at an inclined angle. With this design taking a seat on the rocky heavily inclined slopes of the Adirondack Mountains became much easier and comfortable. Wide armrests for added comfort were also added by Thomas Lee to the original hand painted Adirondack chairs, which later became a signature feature of the Adirondack chair, a feature which many coffee houses and cafés are thankful for to this day. In the past hand painted Adirondack chairs may have been built to those exact specifications, in today’s markets things have changed and the chairs have some new looks like a rounded back or a contoured seat. Plastics or engineered wood are even used in the manufacture of hand painted Adirondack chairs today instead of the genuine article made in real wood.
